About Sol Food Farm
Sol Food Farm was born in the fall of 2005 with the arrival of farmers Leo, Andy and Laura to the property. The fields had been fallow for seven years and needed lots of love and stewardship. The trio dug right in and re-vitalized a famly farm, unearthing an amazing gem that remains to be Your Community Farm!
Historically, the family that owns the property were very productive on the land since the 1940s, caring for many animals and growing a large garden for the household and the community of Occidental. Before that, it was Gravenstein apples as far as the eye could see. The longest-living members of the community are the Redwood and Douglas Fir trees that are around the farm, hosting families of flora and fauna for centuries in the past and future. We always knew we were in a great spot, but the neighbors are the most celebrated part.
With long days of sweat and success, we created Sol Food Farm and prepared for our farmers makets in Sebastopol and Occidental. We acquired organic certification by CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) while we established ourselves, and now choose to maintain our own and our community’s standards of ecological farming without a USDA certificate. In returning to community-based farming, we encourage friends/neighbors to participate and share knowledge in order to connect with the food we nourish ourselves with, and be assured first-hand that we are contributing to the vitality of Harrison Grade.
Through the seasons, we’ve established the soil and our farm to be a strong supporter of our beloved community of friends and neighbors and they have come to rely upon us for the bounty we produce for our bioregion. We primarily distribute the harvest through our CSA program, where households pick up their share of veggies, flowers, and herbs weekly. It’s great for us because we know how much to plant, harvest, and effectively feed our community. CSA members are benefitting by coming to enjoy the farm where our food is grown, and going home with food that was harvested that day. See the link to “CSA” for more details.
